Visual Landscape of Hamlet's Internal Conflict

Student: Geoffrey Case. Geoffrey has used an acrylic painting to present the landscape of Hamlet's internal conflicts in the soliloquy in IV.iv.32-66 ("How all occasions do inform against me...") The slides include Geoffrey's written explanation of how his painting connects to the soliloquy. Note his use of foreground and background to highlight the conflict between Hamlet's preoccupation with his hesitation and inability (thus far) to avenge his father, and the sight immediately before him in this scene: Fortinbras's army on their way to fight in Poland. The ropes are the words that have prevented Hamlet from action up until this moment of resolution. Particularly interesting is Geoffrey's explanation of his choice of colours for the two figures in the background: one is red, a primary colour to convey fiery motivation and unflinching action, while the other figure is a blend of intermediate colours representing indecision.
