Hamlet: An Epic Board Game in the Rooms of Elsinore

Students: Cindey Chiang, Stephanie Tsang, and Sarah Chau. Three students produced an "epic" board game that traces the development of Hamlet's conflicts throughout the play. The design of the game board is based on various settings in Elsinore Castle. As players advance, they will encounter passages from Shakespeare's text that signal some change in Hamlet's fortune; they collect cards that indicate Hamlet's level of success as a friend, a lover, a son, an avenger, a philosopher, etc. Because of the detailed references to the text and the visual layout of Hamlet's conflicts, this game would be ideal as a review of the play. The slides include a written analysis of the board game as it relates not only to conflicts but also symbols and themes in Shakepeare's play. (As an added touch, the figures of the six players allude to the "Mousetrap," the play-within-the-play.)
