Manors

The following are examples of a project from a Social Studies 8 unit on the Middle Ages in Europe. The goal of this project was to visually represent the interconnected parts of the medieval manor village, and demonstrate how that manor may be a model of sustainable living. Students were encouraged to use a variety of drawings, symbols, arrows, text boxes, labels, flaps, overlays and a legend. In paragraph form, they were then asked to connect ideas around sustainable living that existed hundreds of years ago to our concept of sustainability today. For many students this was the first time they had represented complex concepts with images, text and symbols all in the same visual space, so the projects varied greatly in their ability to demonstrate sustainable living in the Middle Ages. Some students incorporated flow charts or a system of arrows. Others relied more heavily on explaining the interconnectedness of the various parts of the manor in a more traditional written form.
