This was the final project of a poetry unit.  The students had to apply their newly acquired skills of analyzing poetry through looking at tone, mood, theme, imagery and other various poetic devices.  The students were put into groups of four, and were asked to choose and share their favourite poems with their group.  After they shared their poems, the group had to choose one poem to do their poetry project on.  Each group member was then given a role.

Four Roles:

  1. Discussion Director: Their role is to write down a list of open ended questions regarding the poem.Their role is to generate and facilitate discussion of the poem.

2) Literary Luminary: Their job is to direct the group's attention to technical aspects of the poem, such as the poet's style, choice of words, tone, use of figurative language, line breaks.

3) Connector: Their job is to connect/relate the poem in some way to their own life, to happenings at school or in the community.

4) Wordsmith: Their job is to be prepared to define any potentially challenging vocabulary in the poem. If there are no challenging words, they will become a second literary luminary.

After the students discussed their poems, they had to present their poster and their poem in a creative way to the class.
