Although all the aspects of the set play a part in revealing the nature of the characters in the play, we felt that the mailbox and the letter were the most powerful aspects of the set. In contrast to the other parts that mirror changes in the action, the mailbox plays a role in causing change in the house. The mailbox and the letter were the most straightforward symbols in the play.

We start at the mailbox and then show how it is related to other parts of the set. The mailbox is not truly "inside" the living space of the house; it has contact with the world outside of the home. Since the mailbox is both part of the life inside the apartment and life outside the apartment, it is an excellent place to begin trying to understand those who live inside the apartment....
