Woolen Spider Webs

  1. I have to stand completely alone, if I'm ever going to discover myself and the world out there. So I can't go on living with you. (1609) ~ Nora

I can't go on believing   what the majority says, or that's written in books. I have to think these things over myself and try to understand them. (1609)      ~ Nora

Both quotations indicate the power of the societal code represented by the spider webs; this binds Nora to her domestic position and inhibits both intellectual freedom and self-realization. Though the webs appear delicate, they possess strength proportionate to that of their captive: Nora's fear of losing her rigidly structured family prevents her from struggling against these stifling principles, and prompts acquiescence to her husband's whims.
