The music is divided into three parts. Part one illustrates the conversation Nora and Helmer prior to Helmer's discovery of the dreaded letter, and is marked moderato.A short, simple introduction in the cello precedes the entrance of the melody in the trombone. The waltz-like style evokes Helmer's light-heartedness, as shown in the following dialogue: "Oh you! how can I hold you close enough" (Bedford, 1605 5th ed).

The trombone enters with a lilting melody that emphasizes his flirtatious mood, using improvised glissandos and rubato. The trombone shifts from the bright key of G major into C major in Bar 4, suggesting Helmer's playfulness.
